The Worst Albergues on the Camino Francés (2026 Update)

    Ana López6/15/20268 min read

Most Camino albergues are wonderful. Some are not. Based on 2025 pilgrim reports and repeat complaints on Gronze, Buen Camino app, and the Camino Forum, here are the ones we'd avoid and the alternatives.

Skip: several municipal albergues in Burgos city center.

Long lines, bed bug reports every season, bathrooms that struggle to keep up. Stay at Albergue Emaús or Hostel Burgos instead.

Skip: the largest dormitory in Roncesvalles at peak season.

180 beds under one roof. If snoring is a problem, book the small annex or the private rooms in Auritz.

Skip: the cheapest private albergue in Sarria on the main street.

Overcrowded from the Sarria bubble. Walk 2 km further to Barbadelo — much better facilities, smaller crowds.

Skip: any albergue with recent Google reviews mentioning 'chinches' (bed bugs).

Check reviews from the last 30 days. Bed bug outbreaks come in waves.

Book: donativo albergues in Grañón, Tosantos, San Nicolás, and Bercianos.

These are the soul of the Camino — communal dinner, small groups, no reservations. Arrive by 2pm.

    Rule of thumb:

if an albergue has over 100 beds and no recent reviews mentioning cleanliness, walk further. The extra 3 km is worth it.
