10 Mistakes First-Time Pilgrims Make (And How to Avoid Them)

    Maria Santos3/15/20248 min read

The Camino de Santiago is a life-changing journey, but it doesn't have to be unnecessarily painful. Here are the top mistakes we see first-time pilgrims make:

    1. Packing Too Heavy

The number one mistake. Your backpack should weigh no more than 10% of your body weight, ideally under 7kg. Every extra kilogram compounds into agony over 800km.

    2. Breaking In New Boots on the Trail

Never, ever start the Camino in brand new footwear. Walk at least 100km in your hiking shoes before day one.

    3. Starting Too Fast

The first week isn't a race. Many pilgrims push too hard initially and end up injured or exhausted. Start with shorter days (15-20km) and build up.

    4. Ignoring Blisters

A small hot spot becomes a debilitating blister if ignored. Stop immediately when you feel friction and apply prevention measures.

    5. Skipping the Albergue Experience

Yes, private rooms are quieter, but you'll miss the community, shared meals, and connections that define the Camino.

    6. Not Carrying Enough Water

Especially on the meseta in summer. Know your next water source and carry at least 1.5L in hot weather.

    7. Forgetting Sun Protection

The Spanish sun is intense. A hat with neck protection, sunscreen, and sunglasses are essential, not optional.

    8. Rigid Daily Planning

The Camino teaches flexibility. Having a rough plan is good, but being unable to adapt leads to stress and missed opportunities.

    9. Neglecting Rest Days

Your body needs recovery. Plan at least one rest day per week, or when your body demands it.

    10. Focusing Only on the Destination

Santiago is the goal, but the journey is the point. Slow down, notice the small moments, and be present.
