Summer 2025 saw a record heatwave across northern Spain, with the Meseta hitting 43°C in the shade. 2026 forecasts call for more of the same. Here's how pilgrims are adapting.
Start walking at 5am.
By 11am you should be done or nearly done. This is not optional in July and August anymore — it is survival.
Rest through the midday.
Find a bar with air conditioning between 1pm and 5pm. Read, nap, eat, hydrate. Don't try to walk through it.
Electrolytes, not just water.
Add SIS Hydro tablets or Nuun to your water. Plain water in extreme heat causes hyponatremia, which kills pilgrims almost every year.
Skip the Meseta if you're heat-sensitive.
Take the bus from Burgos to León. There is zero shade for 200 km. This is not cheating — it's smart.
Wet buff on the neck.
Soak a buff at every fountain and wear it around your neck. This drops your core temperature meaningfully.
Sun hoody beats t-shirt.
A UPF 50 sun hoody with a hood is cooler than exposed skin. Counterintuitive, backed by desert hikers everywhere.
Watch for heat stroke symptoms.
Stopped sweating, confusion, headache, nausea — get off the trail immediately and into shade or a bar. Call 112 if severe.
