The Camino in 2026 — What to Expect
2026 is shaping up to be one of the busiest Camino years on record. Here's what's new.
Pilgrim numbers
Expected: ~480,000 Compostelas issued — a new record. Driven by post-Holy Year momentum and continued growth on the Portugués Coastal.
What's new this year
- New municipal albergues on the Norte (Llanes, Ribadeo expansions).
- Improved waymarking on the Vía de la Plata.
- Booking apps now mandatory for some private albergues in peak season.
- Continued bag-transfer service expansion (Jacotrans, Correos).
Booking strategy for 2026
Pre-book private albergues in stage towns for July–August. Municipal albergues remain first-come, so plan to arrive by 1pm.
