    Camino de Santiago Accommodation Guide

Where you sleep sets your budget, your daily rhythm and how well you recover. This guide covers every accommodation type on the Camino, what each costs, when booking actually matters and how to find a bed when a stage town is full.

    When to book ahead

    • Book: July–August, the last 100 km from Sarria, Easter and Holy Years, and winter.
    • Don't bother: spring and autumn on the Francés before Sarria, and most of the Norte, Primitivo and Inglés outside August.
    • Never bookable: municipal and donativo albergues — these are walk-in only.

    Daily accommodation rhythm

    • Check-in: 12:00–14:00 opening, credencial stamped, shoes off at the door.
    • Laundry: hand-wash and hang by 15:00 so clothes dry before evening.
    • Curfew: doors typically lock at 22:00 and lights go out at 22:30.
    • Checkout: 08:00 in most albergues; earlier in summer heat.

For dorm etiquette, snoring strategies and shower logistics, read the albergue guide.

    If the town is full

    • Ask the hospitalero to phone ahead — they know who has beds.
    • Take a taxi forward or back 5–10 km, sleep, and taxi back to the trail in the morning.
    • Check pensións and casas rurales; they rarely fill when albergues do.
    • Split stages so you arrive in smaller villages rather than famous stage towns.

    Budgeting your nights

A mixed strategy — municipal albergues most nights, a pensión every fifth night — averages about €20 per night. Model your own trip with the budget calculator.

    Book a bed

Private albergues, pensións and guesthouses along the route can be reserved in advance. Municipal and donativo albergues stay walk-in only.
