What to wear FAQ
What should I wear walking the Camino de Santiago?+
A merino or synthetic short-sleeve top, hiking shorts or light trekking pants, merino socks, trail runners or light boots, a sun hat and a buff. Carry a fleece and a waterproof shell for weather changes and keep one clean set for the evening.
How many clothes do I need for the Camino?+
Follow the 3-2-1 rule: three pairs of socks, underwear and tops; two bottoms plus one mid-layer; one insulated jacket, one rain shell and one evening set. Wash daily rather than carrying more.
Can I wear cotton on the Camino?+
No. Cotton holds sweat, chafes and takes over a day to dry in an albergue, which invites blisters and rashes. Use merino wool or synthetic fabrics for everything that touches skin.
What should I wear in albergues in the evening?+
A lightweight set kept clean for evenings: a T-shirt plus leggings, light trousers, a skirt or running shorts, and flip-flops or sandals that double as shower shoes.
Do I need to dress modestly to enter Camino churches?+
Cathedrals including Santiago expect shoulders and knees covered. A buff, a light long-sleeve layer or a packable skirt handles this without carrying dedicated clothing.
