Best Month to Walk the Camino
Short answer: May and September are tied for first. Long answer: it depends on you.
Why May & September win
Mild temperatures (15–22°C), long daylight, full albergue network open, moderate crowds, beautiful landscapes (wildflowers in May, harvest in September).
When to avoid (and when not to)
- August: Hottest + most crowded. Only walk if you must.
- January/December: Most albergues closed. For experienced winter hikers only.
- April: Great except Easter week — book ahead on the Francés.
